(CBS News) The Laguna Beach Unified School District, in Southern California, is the latest district to rebel against the federal healthy lunch program -- a cornerstone of first lady Michelle Obama's campaign against childhood obesity. The school district announced Tuesday night that it will revise its lunch menus. This CBS News story is not quite accurately characterizing Evita Obama's role in implementing this program. She doesn't just "tout" it, she is the driving force behind it. I think it's fair to say that were it not for Evita, none of these mandates would have happened.
The USDA (which administers the program) says growing pains are to be expected, but the complaints from school officials are getting louder; they say kids aren't eating the vegetables and low-fat choices and end up too hungry to learn. And they're saying they're losing money from throwing out all the uneaten food.
The new lunch rules, some districts say, are just unpalatable. Grumblings came from school boards in California to Illinois, Indiana and New York.
In Kentucky, one official said students thought the healthy fare "tastes like vomit."
David H. Freedman writes about the obesity epidemic as contributing editor for The Atlantic. He said, "Any time we try to get people to take a big push or force them into it, we can expect probably the majority of people to not want to make that leap."
Under the program, the federal government dictates portions and menus. Lunches must include fresh fruit, vegetables, and whole grains. And there's a calorie cap: 850 for high school kids, 700 for middle school, and 650 for elementary school.
The problem is you can lead kids to crap, but you can't make them eat it. In actual fact, totalitarian programs such as this make childhood obesity worse: Kid's throw away the vomitty crap they are served at school that is supposed to be "good for them", and rush home at the end of the day starving and pig out on all the crap that gives Evita Obama nightmares -- except when her family is eating it at least.
You see, just like the first ladies of totalitarian dictatorships, Michele believes her school lunch mandates are for the peasants -- not for the ruling class of which she is the queen. I'm quite certain they don't feed the quests at Evita's lavish White House parties school lunch crap. And we know how Barry loves his fried food.
I'm not completely down on Michele "Evita" Obama. I applaud her efforts to encourage (not mandate) kids to get more exercise. But it's pretty clear that her meddling in the school lunch program is not only hypocritical, it's a miserable failure as well.
