The White House presented a detailed breakdown Friday of $109 billion in across-the-board spending cuts scheduled for January, setting off a fresh blame game between the Obama administration and Republicans over responsibility for what both say is a preventable budgetary calamity.
The itemization of the so-called "sequestration" plan showed potential pain all around: $11 billion out of the Medicare healthcare program for the elderly, a $15.3 billion cut in defense procurement accounts and hefty cuts to a Department of Agriculture program that supports farm prices.
There was also a cut of $129 million from embassy security, which would be particularly ill-timed in light of deadly attacks on U.S. diplomatic posts in the Middle East, Africa and Afghanistan by Islamic militants in recent days.
"Sequestration would be deeply destructive to national security, domestic investments and core government functions," the report says.
Don't let this feigned "alarm" from the White House fool you -- this is exactly as the Obama Administration wants it. Don't take my word for it, listen to retired Lt. Colonel and current U.S. Representative Alan West in the Republican's weekly radio address:
President Obama's failure to lead is inexcusable on its face, but what makes it even more so is the fact that this 'sequester' was his administration's idea in the first place. You see, last year, the president wanted to avoid making the tough choices necessary to get our economy moving again and deal with our crushing debt. He didn't want to deal with the issue again before his re-election campaign, so the White House created this dangerous 'sequester' as an escape hatch.
Dodging his responsibility is how the 'sequester' came about, so it is no surprise the president is doing the exact same thing now.
In May, he threatened to veto legislation passed by the House that would replace his 'sequester' with responsible spending cuts and reforms. And the president's Senate did nothing.
Like Clinton before him, Obama loathes the military and his $1 trillion cuts in military spending over ten years prove it. If that's not enough for you, consider his utter neglect of the war in Afghanistan as more brave soldiers have died in two years under his watch than in seven years under GW Bush. Then consider his lackluster, weak, apologetic and un-presidential response to attacks on our sovereign territory and the murder of innocent Americans in the Middle East -- "we strongly condemn" -- if we can't do more than "strongly condemn" at act of war against us, we're incredibly weak and that's as Obama wants it. He's simply following the "dreams from his father" where the evil colonial powers are cut down to size so the third world can be lifted up.
As it has been for the past three Democrat presidents, it has been up to the incoming Republican president to build our military back up after each successive Democrat president decimated it. And each Democrat president has gotten worse. Reagan was left to deal with Carter's neglect of the military and the wreckage of his apologetic and irresponsible foreign policy. GW Bush had to fight a War on Terror while trying to recover our military from Clinton's 40% reductions in hardware and force -- the exact neglect that emboldened terrorists to attack us less than nine months after Clinton left office. Now the next Republican president -- let's hope to God it's Romney in January -- will be left to deal with Obama's drastic reductions in the military in the face of increased Chinese aggression in their region combined with their dramatic military build-up as well as Russia's military build-up. At the same time, they will have to deal with the ever-increasing terror threat to Americans around the world and right here at home and try to get out in front of the inevitable next mass terror attack on American soil. History is clear: A Democrat president means a weaker America and a more dangerous world.
If we don't look out for our interests here and around the world and keep the world safe for democracy, no one else will. A weak US military and weak US foreign policy make for a less-safe world -- it's been proven time and time again over the decades. If we don't protect our interests and keep America and Americans safe around the world, nothing else matters. We'll find ourselves in World War III. We can't afford to re-elect the rank amateur who occupies the White House. He MUST be defeated in November.
